While it doesn’t appear the Cabela’s King Kat Trail will be making up the local tournament that was cancelled due to flooding earlier this year, there still is a last chance opportunity for local anglers to participate and possibly qualify for the Cabela’s King Kat Classic.
The Kansas City Catfish Club will hold a night catfish tournament at the Kaw Point boat ramp and park in Kansas City, Kan. The tournament will be held tonight from 7 until 8 a.m. Sunday. Registration for the tournament will be done at the event itself from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Kaw Point.
As the Kansas City Catfish Club is a Cabela’s King Kat-affiliated club, the top 20 teams will be qualified to fish the nationally known Cabela’s King Kat Classic, which will be held on the Ohio River at Henderson, Ky., on Sept. 26 and 27.
Entry fees for the tournament are $120 (cash only) although the first-place finisher will be awarded a 50 percent payout, while second place will earn 30 percent and third place 20 percent. Each person fishing this event also will be entered in a drawing for a new 18-foot SeaArk boat and trailer to be drawn for at the Cabela’s King Kat Classic.
Originally, the Cabela’s King Kat Trail was scheduled to make a stop at the French Bottoms Access in St. Joseph. Flooding in mid-June forced a cancellation of the event, although officials wanted to give local anglers a chance to qualify for the classic later this year.
Those who don’t wish to participate in the tournament might consider heading to the weigh-in itself, which will be held at 8 a.m. Sunday. With a large field of competitive catfish anglers, there are no doubt going to be many exciting moments and big fish brought to the scales.
In the 2007 event, Bernard Sutton and Jamie Embry brought a 32.25-pound monster to the scales at the French Bottoms on a day when fishing conditions were less than favorable. Their large catch earned them a check for $500 and a brand new Minn Kota trolling motor for the biggest cat of the event. This year’s night format may even result in larger catches.
The Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail was designed to offer catfish anglers and club fishermen the opportunity to advance to a new level of competitive fishing similar to bass and walleye tournaments.
The trail is a team event, and teams consist of one or two persons with one exception. A third person may accompany the team provided the third person is under 16 years of age or over 65.
