Nun elected to soap-makers board

Benedictine Sister of Perpetual Adoration Cathleen Marie Timberlake, OSB, has been elected to the board of directors for the Handcrafted Soap Makers Guild Inc.

She is the creative force behind Monastery Scents, the sisters’ line of quality handcrafted soaps. The Handcrafted Soap Makers Guild Inc. is an international non-profit trade organization that promotes the handcrafted soap industry and serves as a resource and communication center among soap makers.

During the guild’s 2008 conference, Sister Cathleen Marie also earned level I soap-maker certification. This new program helps to recognize members as competent soap makers. The guild, which includes members from all 50 states and around the world, is governed by a seven-person board of directors.

Faith United Church plans F.U.N.

Faith United Church, 3025 Karnes Road, will hold its monthly “Family Unity Night” (F.U.N.) beginning at 6 p.m. Aug. 13 in the church’s fellowship hall. The evening will include devotions, singing, dinner and study groups for all ages. A nursery will be provided and transportation will be available.

On Aug. 17, the Joy Group (kindergarten through fifth grade) will meet at noon in the church’s fellowship hall. Melissa Sager will be the guest speaker and will do a puppet presentation that she has presented at several locations, even overseas. Lunch will be served. The Joy Group leaders are Devera Lambing, Julie Fisch and Doyle Smith.

Wesley UMC to host ice-cream social

Wesley United Methodist Church at Ajax and Pear streets will host an ice-cream social from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 17. Pie, cake and drinks also will be available, and a free-will offering will be taken.

Financial ministry plans seminar

Crown Financial Ministries of Kansas City and Northwest Missouri has a one-day seminar scheduled to take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at Calvary Baptist Church, 4451 10th Ave. in Leavenworth, Kan. The event will teach fundamental, biblical principles of managing resources, saving, debt and setting priorities; God’s nature and how he uses money to lead to financial freedom; practical steps to establish a plan to properly manage resources; and more.

Celebration planned to fight drugs, crime

An all-faiths community celebration, prayer and healing service will take place from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at John Lucas Park and Bartlett Center. Members of the community representing several faiths and denominations have come together to pray and organize the event to fight drug activity and crime at this location.

The service will begin with a prayer walk starting at the shelter house, which will be followed by music, poetry, praise dancers, drama and more at the park. There also will be food, speakers and prayer. For more information, call Bonnie White at 671-1945 or Ramadhan Washington at 387-9598.

New Hope Baptist honors pastor

The New Hope Baptist Church family will celebrate the Revs. Louis and Connie Monroe’s sixth anniversary with the church beginning at 6 p.m. today with an anniversary musical featuring many local gospel artists. The Greater New Bethel Church of Kansas City, Kan., will be special guests.

During the 11 a.m. worship service Aug. 10, Walter Hughes of Greater Jesus Tabernacle in St. Joseph will be the guest preacher, and at 3 p.m., a worship service led by Dr. William Hedge of St. Francis Baptist Temple in St. Joseph will take place. St. Francis’ choir and congregation will be special guests, and a reception will follow.

The Rev. Louis Monroe has served New Hope Baptist Church for a total of 19 years. Prior to serving with Promise Keepers for six years, he was with New Hope for 13 years, and he was asked to resume his position as the church’s pastor after returning to St. Joseph.

Agape Love Fellowship plans revival

Agape Love Fellowship Church, 2500 S. 11th St., will host a revival featuring the Rev. Jean Smith at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 17 and at 7 p.m. Aug. 18 through 22. Everyone is welcome. For more information, call 364-2263 or 341-3248.
