It was hard not to drool at the Panera Bread opening-day festivities this morning. From the second I walked in the door, my senses were overloaded. Not only were there almost wall to wall bagels, pastries, breads and cookies, but the smells of fresh brewed coffee, eggs and whipped frostings were overwhelming. I left hungry.
Panera, located in the Pony Express Plaza at Belt and Frederick, officially opened at 6 a.m. Friday. Sen. Charlie Shields, Mayor Ken Shearin and several St. Joseph city council members along with Buchanan County commissioners were present to break bread with the staff of Panera and franchise president Randy Simon.
After the traditional bread tug-of-war, Mr. Shearin tossed a couple pieces to other community business leaders in the crowd.
Both Mr. Shields and Mr. Shearin praised the new restaurant for its partnership with the Second Harvest Food Bank. Panera will donate all of its leftover breads to the local charity.
Panera will be open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays.
