MOUND CITY, Mo. — A blowout in the northbound lanes of Interstate 29 Wednesday led to the closing of the southbound lanes about four miles south of Mound City.
An ambulance transported Matthew Davis, 31, Stephen Biondi, 56, and John Woolery, 60, to Heartland Regional Medical Center. Mr. Woolery, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was admitted to the hospital, a nursing supervisor said. Mr. Woolery, from Lakeland, Fla., was in good condition Wednesday evening. The other two men were treated and released, the supervisor said.
According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Mr. Davis, from Amazonia, Mo., was driving a 1999 Kenworth north on the interstate when the truck experienced a blowout on the left front tire. Mr. Davis lost control of the truck, which ran into the median, slamming into the guardrail. The truck continued crossing the median while turning on its side and sliding into the southbound lane of the interstate at about 7:30 a.m. A 2006 Freightliner driven by Mr. Biondi, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, ran head-on into the sliding Kenworth, ejecting Mr. Davis. Mr. Davis received a citation for failure to wear a seat belt.
Traffic in the southbound lanes of the interstate had to detour for three hours. Ideker Construction employees, who were working on a Missouri Department of Transportation project at the scene, assisted the trooper at the scene with rescue and cleanup.
