Cameron cancer concerns
by Gretchen Mollenhour
Thursday, August 21, 2008

It was a full house Thursday night at the Cameron United Methodist Church as concerned citizens, city leaders, Department of Natural Resources and The Environmental Protection Agency participated in a question and answer session with many concerned Cameron families.

EPA officials say the amounts of arsenic and lead found at some sites do not come close to levels of danger for the public.

Soil samples were taken from an old quarry and the Rockwell sites that were suspect. The research shows that the levels of lead and arsenic from surface soil at the Rockwell site and arsenic levels in surface soil at the quarry tested above what is termed, "screening values." These screening values however pose no health risk to anyone coming in contact with the soil or water in those areas. An environmental epidemiology specialist said even someone who has come in contact with those surface soils everyday for 25 years would never see any health risks.

Cameron's water had also been extensively tested and found to contain none of these contaminates. Some concerned citizens such as Don Lowenstein are worried the EPA is not looking at the whole picture. He says this picture is much bigger.

The next step is to wait for studies from the cancer inquiry committee and review their preliminary findings. If the findings result in any common links between cases, further tests will be made in that area.

The EPA will continue to test the areas for any other contamination in the soil that could be linked to high number of cancerous and benign brain tumors.
