Prioritize
Three things come to mind this afternoon. No. 1 is gas prices. How would you crybaby whiners in St. Joe like to live up in Holt County, say in the Mound City area, and pay 20, 25 cents more for a gallon of gas than you people in St. Joseph do? No. 2, anytime there is an article concerning the poor and underprivileged people and there are accompanying photos, invariably there is a photo of someone smoking a cigarette. These things are expensive. Where are your priorities?
Great job
I walk at the mall. And I just want to say thank you to the construction crews who are accommodating the walkers out there in every way. Great job and thanks again.
Fight a fair fight
Why is it for every presidential election, the Republicans seem to find all the dirt they can on the Democratic challengers? And not only just common dirt, but little dirt. It’s always something big, like a preacher or an affair that somebody had with a mistress or a secretary. How come they can’t let a fair fight just handle itself? I have friends and even family members who don’t like Obama, and they have no idea why — it’s because they’ve listened to some of these childish little things that these people have done that will end up keeping a good man out of office. It’s about time they really found out about politics and not rode on the shirttails of their parents or friends reputations of politics. I think it’s time to just let these people have a good election and find out who’s best.
Parking woes
I’m calling about the “Take a look” call that was in the paper today. I got a parking ticket on Sunday at Trails West! on North 13th and it said that I was parking in a no-parking or standing spot, which there was a no-parking or standing sign way up by the curb to the north and there was one by the curb to the south, but in between those two signs there was nothing that said no parking. Every car on that block got a $10 ticket and thanks to St. Joseph’s finest, I won’t ever be going to Trails West! again if I’m going to get a ticket for parking illegally.
Message to thief
I hope the people who stole my little garden story girl are enjoying it as much as I did, but I doubt it, because there are several reasons why that little statue was special. I have never seen another one like it. Actually, I feel more sorry for you than for me. Because even though I miss seeing it, I’m not the one who has the problem. Apparently you were not only not taught that stealing is wrong, but you must have no empathy for others. Did it not occur to you that such an item might mean something special to someone?
To "Fair Fight",
Posted by younggrandma on August 21, 2008 at 8:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)I hope you're not trying to suggest that only Republicans sling mud during campaigns, that's absolutely ridiculous. In fact, I believe I have heard more Democratic "jabs" on this site aimed at McCains wife, who isn't even running for the job than McCain himself. Besides, it isn't our fault that finding faults with the Democratic candidates is so easy.
The reason these issues are brought to light is to show the character (or lack thereof) of these individuals and address the way their actions in life contradict what they claim to stand for, i.e. Obama and his racist church, Edwards and his "upstanding moral character." Anyone can put on a show during a campaign, I like to see the "real" candidate so that I can make a decision on my own instead of being part of a flock that has to be told how to think, like the Democrats.
To "Fair Fight" I was watching AC 360 last night and Obamas ratings are slipping. His camp announced that in the future he will be slinging as much mud as he can. (they did not say it quite that way but that was what they meant) He is terrified to loose and in the future we will see his true side. As for me I would like to know what someone is truley like. If they have sit and listened to a racist preacher for 20 years I would like to know that. I would never want someone like John Edwards that has an affair and lies about it as his wife sits at home alone dying being voted in as anything. Sometimes it's best to know who your voting for even if you don't want to hear it.
Posted by torg on August 21, 2008 at 8:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)@Rax: I hope you're not suggesting that any political party is innocent of mudslinging. Even so, all I'm seeing in your comment is Democrat-bashing, which is hardly what anyone would call a legitimate argument.
Furthermore, to say that Democrats are only following a flock and being told how to think is hardly fair, especially considering the fact that an overwhelming number of Republicans (I won't say "majority" yet) are only voting that way for religious reasons...
Posted by suzyQ on August 21, 2008 at 10:11 a.m. (Suggest removal)torg- Shouldn't you vote for the person who shares your views? If that be religous, so be it. It is one's right.
Fair Fight- I'm still haking my head at at the point you were trying to make, are you suggesting that one's moral character should not be a factor in deciding whether to vote for them or to be considered as a factor whether they would be a good candidate to lead our country? and that is always the republicans doing dirty politics and not dems? That's laughable.

Posted by Rax on August 21, 2008 at 10:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)torg,
I understand perfectly that both sides sling mud, that was my point exactly. As far as the herd mentality, yes, I absolutely believe that Democrats are MUCH more guilty of this and I assure you the majority of Republicans do not vote that way due to religious reasons. I believe the majority of "us" are voting for McCain because we are tired of working our butts off only to see Democratic politicians keep pushing us to give up more of our income to support those too lazy to work themselves.
As for bashing Democratic candidates, I am simply pointing out facts, not bashing.

She descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."
The man consulted his GPS and replied "You are in a hot air balloon approximately 30' above a ground elevation of 2346' above sea level. You are 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude."
"You must be a Republican," said the balloonist.
"I am", replied the man. "How did you know?"
"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I am still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help so far."
The man responded, "You must be a Democrat."
"I am," replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?"
"Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you are going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it's my fault.
Posted by dalearch on August 21, 2008 at 11:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. She considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, but her father was a staunch Republican.
One day she was challenging her father on his beliefs and his opposition to high taxes and welfare programs. He stopped her and asked her, "How are you doing in school?"
She answered that she had a 4.0 GPA, but it was really tough. She had to study all the time and never had time to go out and party. She didn't have time for a boyfriend and didn't really have many college friends because she was spending all her time studying. On top of that, the part-time job her father insisted she keep left absolutely no time for anything else.
He asked, "How is your friend Mary?"
She replied that Mary was barely getting by. She had a 2.0 GPA, never studied, but was very popular on campus, didn't have a job, and went to all the parties. She was always complaining about not having any money, but didn't want to work. Why, she often didn't show up for classes because she was hung over.
Dad then asked his daughter why she didn't go to the Dean's office and request that 1.0 be taken off her 4.0 and given it to her friend who only had a 2.0. That way they would both have a respectable 3.0GPA. Then, she could also give her friend half the money she'd earned from her job so that her friend would no longer be broke.
The daughter angrily fired back, "That wouldn't be fair. I worked really hard for my grades and money, and Mary just loafs. Why should her laziness and irresponsibility be rewarded with half of what I've worked for?"
The father slowly smiled and said,
"Welcome to the Republican Party."

I think all the democrats hot air could be the cause of this alleged global warming.
Posted by chooseliberty on August 21, 2008 at 2:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)Mr_America, thank you for pointing out that global warming is, indeed, "alleged." It is good to know that not everyone has bought into the so-called scientific consensus. (There is no consensus, by the way. Especially among scientists. But its premises open up our leaders to unprecedented amounts of power . . . power which BOTH major parties are eager to get their hands on!)
Posted by gocubbies on August 21, 2008 at 2:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)Parking woes. Did you not pay attention to the test you took to get your drivers license? There are two no parking signs on each end of the block, which means no parking on that side of the street between the signs. Do you really need to have a no parking sign every 10 feet or so that that way you know not to park there.
As far as Obama. I consider myself as a Democrat, but not one with blinders. Obama has a lot to say, the problem is it's a lot of quantity, not quality. I could stand on that platform and say change, change, and more change. I would just like for once for him to actually say what he intends to change and how he will do it.
As far as mudslinging, and infidelity. Do you Republicans actually think only the Democrats have this problem? I would have to say 90% of power hungry individuals have similar issues. Granted the Dems are the ones who usually are the ones in the media regarding these issues, but you must take into consideration how you are informed of this. Ultraconservative republican bias AP news media will do anything to help their cause just like any other special interest group.
Posted by younggrandma on August 21, 2008 at 3:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)gocubbies...You said "Ultraconservative republican bias AP news media will do anything to help their cause just like any other special interest group". Oh please how do you think Obama has risen from no one knowing who he is to people thinking he can walk on water? The Ultraconservative bias AP news media who will do anything to help their cause just like any other special interest group, thats who. He said last night that he is from IL and people from IL know how to play politics...... How many IL officials does he have to be reminded of that have fallen from grace and yet he stood there and seemed to be proud to be one of them.

It seems there is a storm brewing over the Buchanan County Courthouse, brought on by the drunken sailor spending habits of Mr Hausman and his puppet R. Turner. It appears to have taken them only two years to go from a budget in the black for over 10 years to nearly 2 million dollars in unpayable bills. The blame seems to lay on the shoulders of our newest 2 commissioners and not the other officeholders and dicated county employees. Now would be a good time for R. Turner to use his campaign promised "rainy day fund".
