For teens hoping to both fit in and distinguish themselves, jeans are the perfect piece of apparel.
Jeans are popular among every group. But because they are so basic, it’s easy to find ways to personalize them. The choices teens make reflects their individual style and personality.
“I think you can tell a lot about people by their jeans,” says Ashley Denbow, 17, a Benton High School senior.
Ashley, who buys several pairs annually, wears both the trendy straight-leg jeans and the more comfortable flairs. She says her jeans say she’s not too into her clothing.
“I think they say I’m kind of mellow and that I just like to be comfortable,” she says.
Scott Heddin, a 17-year-old junior at Benton, says baggy men’s jeans also say comfort.
But carpenter-style jeans communicate a different sort of style.
“I think that’d be someone who likes to be outdoors or work with their hands,” says Michael Westfall, 16, a Benton junior.
All three teens agree that the women’s straight-leg jeans are worn by those who are stylish and into current fashions. But those who choose bell-bottom jeans are more in touch with the retro styles.
“Seems like those are more of the alternative girls,” Ashley says.
Ashley says women’s jeans decorated with rhinestones and patches are typically sported by the free-spirited and creative.
“They are probably wearing them to be noticed,” Michael says.
Michael says he doesn’t like paying attention to his or anyone else’s clothing. He owns about six pairs of jeans.
“I just wear them because I’ve got to wear something,” he says.
