Every year, the community has a chance to view art from up and coming high school artists.

“The Regional High School Art Exhibition is one of our most popular shows,” says Jennifer Zeller, curator of education at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art.

The annual exhibition features work from 135 students representing 28 schools.

“People are excited to see what young people are doing and to see what kind of talent they have,” Zeller says.

The work comes from nine different categories, including painting, black-and-white drawing, color drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics, digital art and 2-D mixed media.

“It’s a varied show,” Zeller says. “There is definitely something for everyone.”

According to Zeller, the teachers are the initial jury for the exhibit. Lafayette High School art teacher Meagan Root says her students submit their first semester of work for review. Then the teachers choose pieces to send to the Albrecht-Kemper.

Once the pieces arrive at the Albrecht-Kemper, Zeller says a panel of judges selects winners in all nine categories. Winners will be honored at the opening reception, from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24. The awards ceremony will take place at 2 p.m.

For students, the show offers an opportunity to receive feedback from the judges.

“For our students, it is one of the most prestigious exhibits in the area,” Root says. “Every year the work seems to get better. It’s a great experience for the students.”

The exhibit will be on display through April 6. Admission to the museum is $5 for adults, $2 for seniors and $1 for students. Admission to the opening is free.
