1 charged in tussle; gun found next day
by St. Joseph News-Press
Thursday, July 17, 2008

The St. Joseph Police Department found a gun near Monday night’s altercation between groups of Hispanic and black residents.

Police officers went to U.S. Oil’s parking lot at 22nd and Messanie streets at 10 p.m. because about 30 people had gathered in two groups, said Capt. Kevin Castle.

Police dispersed the group without incident. One man was charged with disorderly conduct.

Officers searched the area Monday night but didn’t find any weapons. Officers returned Tuesday during daylight and found the handgun, Mr. Castle said.

No one is known to have discharged a weapon during the altercation Monday.

Are you kidding me? A tussle? With weapons. Who's kidding who here? Just because one weapon is found, doesn't mean that was the only one present. Why does it seem that the police are afraid to call this what it is regarding gang activity? Anybody?

I think it was an impromptu Mensa meeting gone awry.

rush620...are YOU kidding me? You can't really believe that there are "gangs" in Saint Joseph...and I surely hope you don't believe that groups of Black and Hispanic youths automatically constitute gangs....C'mon on people...

they don't have the ability to deal with gangs. and they should shut this business down, it is nothing but trouble.

Trouble, oh we got trouble,
Right here in St. Joseph!
With a capital "T"
That rhymes with "G"
And that stands for Gangs!

Two or three individuals involved in a fight; probably a disagreement out of control. When you see approximately 30 people involved in a situation it did not happen by chance.
Addressing this problem aggressively early on is in the best interest of the city versus a wait and see attitude. Given what has been taking place thus far, no one will like what they see next.

Well I don't think 30 people having a rumble in a busy intersection who are mainly black and hispanic constitute anything BUT gangs. Of course I'm not saying just because they were black or hispanic, then they were a gang, I'm saying because of the friggin number of people there creating the disturbance. Plus if this was the first time that would be one thing but have we forgotten the "shoot out" from that gas station to the neighboring Domino's pizza place?! I'm sure that not one resident in that area would want to argue about gang presence as well as I doubt they would object to leveling the damn gas station!

Perhaps this was a group of 30 or so well-intentioned citizens concerned about the escalating cost of gas and the effects it is having on Domino's drivers.

Would there be this same level of concern if there were 30 midgets gathered? Birthday clowns? Sock puppets? People in purple Barney costumes?

If the PD is truly unaware of gang influence here, they need to be advised of the activity. That means getting involved, people. Please call when you see or hear ANYTHING that you feel might gang activity. Squeaky wheels eventually get oiled. If the PD is choosing to downplay the presence of these social groups (why? i have no idea), the issue needs to be addressed. There is lots of summer left. Heat brings tension and tension brings violence.

To say there are no gangs in St. Joe is like saying we do not have any drinking problems here either.......
