A Union Pacific train derailed Friday afternoon in St. Joseph’s South Side, blocking off several streets for nearly an hour.

Several streets in the South Side of St. Joseph were blocked off for nearly an hour Friday afternoon after a Union Pacific train derailed near the Bluff View Road crossing.

Five train cars carrying coal went off the tracks just after 2 p.m. One car landed on its side, spilling coal near Lower Lake Road.

Officers from the St. Joseph Police Department assisted with traffic concerns. The derailment blocked vehicle traffic at the Alabama Street and Bluff View Road crossings.

Triumph Foods was in the process of a shift change shortly after the accident, which added to the traffic congestion.

Ag Processing was asked to open gates to allow traffic and emergency vehicles to flow through their facility.

Union Pacific workers separated sections of the train to allow for traffic flow.

No one was injured when the accident occurred, according to police officers.

Union Pacific workers on scene refused comment.
