Nearly 80 women from around the globe are gearing up for this week's tennis tournament in St. Joseph.
It's the USTA Pro Circuit which is the pathway to the US Open and tour level competition for tennis players. Professional athletes from more than 20 countries, including the U.S., are competing for 10-thousand dollars in prize money. Matches begin Saturday at the Noyes Tennis Center at Noyes Boulevard and Edmond Streets. It is free and open to the public.
Ron Selkirk, tournament director, says St. Joseph has been tournament site for the USTA for years. A spokeswoman from the St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau says the tournament is bringing in nearly 87-thousand dollars to St. Joseph.
