Local golfer aces $10,000 hole
by Scott Pummell
Friday, July 25, 2008

Before Friday, Tim Woodruff never saw anyone make a hole-in-one. He’d never made one himself.

But he’s $10,000 wealthier after his first experience with the landmark golfing moment.

Woodruff aced hole No. 11 at Moila Country Club’s Patio Fundraiser. The hole was designated with the cash prize — plus an extra $1,000 each for the golfer’s three playing partners.

“I can’t say the rest of the day was real great,” said Woodruff, whose four-person team shot a 2-under during the tournament. “But that particular hole was real nice.”

Moila member John Gibson had paid the $390 to insure the 175-yard hole and set up the prize.

Woodruff walked up to the tees with a 7-iron but switched to a 6-iron at the last moment.

“I knew my ball looked good when I hit it, but I didn’t actually watch it land,” he said. “I knew it was on the green. Then one of my playing partners started shouting and acting crazy. The spotters were all jumping for joy.”

The ball hit a foot in front of the hole, climbed the flag and went in.

“Honestly,” Woodruff said, “I didn’t even realized that was the money hole. I’ve never even seen a hole-in-one, let alone hit one.”

Moila golf professional Randy McGohan said he’s only seen someone beat an insured hole-in-one one other time in his career.

“It doesn’t happen often, but it’s a lot of fun when it does,” McGohan said. “It definitely caused some excitement.”

McGohan said he doesn’t have big plans for the winnings: maybe a celebratory dinner and a movie, and then the rest will go to paying bills.

But the money won’t be used to buy any fancy new golf clubs.

“I’m pretty happy with the ones I got,” he said. “They just earned me a bunch of money.”
