Some gun owners might call Thursday a day of victory. The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Americans have the right to own guns for self defense and hunting.

The court struck down a District of Columbia ban on handgun possession; a 5 to 4 ruling. This law was among the nation's strictest. The court ruled that under the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment, it protects an individual's right to have a gun, at least in one's home.

Locally, A-Bee's Pawn & Gun Shop owner, Boyd Cunningham, said he sees it as an affirmation of one of the Constitution's original, individual rights. He said he is glad the high court ruled on the right to bear arms and he considers it a win for United State's citizens.

An employee at Dean's Gun Shop said he was surprised the Supreme Court ruling was so close and that he was glad it was final.
