A Republican candidate for governor will hang in St. Joseph Wednesday to push tax relief she'd seek if elected.
Treasurer Sarah Steelman plans to discuss her proposals at a news conference at the East Hills Library, located at 502 N. Woodbine Road. The conference starts at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Ms. Steelman faces a U.S. representative, Kenny Hulshof, R-Columbia, in the August primary for governor. A fellow state officer, Attorney General Jay Nixon, is running as a Democrat for the post.
Ms. Steelman this morning in Jefferson City announced her plan for nearly $200 million in tax breaks.
She would offset the breaks with a 2 percent reduction in state general revenue or a .08 percent reduction in the state's total $23 billion budget, according to campaign materials.
She would increase the personal exemption from $2,100 to $2,625 for single tax filers and $4,200 to $5,250 for married filers "giving the vast majority of taxpayers a lower tax burden."
She envisions an increase in "the dependent child exemption from $1,200 to $2,100 providing families with two children $108 in tax relief and families with three children $162 in tax relief to help offset increasing costs on family necessities."
If successful, she also would pursue upping the exemption on dependent senior citizens from $1,000 to $2,100.
