MD Management, the developer who is renovating the East Hills Shopping Center, is considering making improvements to two other malls in the region.
The renovations won’t affect the ongoing efforts at the St. Joseph mall, which are expected to be completed by October.
In late April, MD Management, based in Shawnee Mission, Kan., backed out of a potential redevelopment venture with Alberta Development Partners to renovate Metro North and Metcalf South malls, according to Jim Harpool of Kansas City retail developer Harpool Morgan Haney LLC.
Metro North mall is in Kansas City, Mo., and Metcalf South mall is in Overland Park, Kan.
MD Management owns shares in both Kansas City malls, manages the East Hills mall and owns 60 percent of Belt Highway LP, the company that technically owns it.
While the groups backed away from a collaborated effort to update the shopping centers in Kansas City, MD Management still contends it has plans to improve both malls.
“There’s not a whole lot to tell at this point,” Mr. Harpool said. “We’re beginning to take a look at both of these to see what could be done with each. They are fairly complicated projects.”
Both Kansas City malls have multiple ownerships, something that Mr. Harpool said can complicate a project of this size.
“We’re just beginning to sort through those issues,” he said.
While the St. Joseph mall is getting a modern twist to the traditional indoor shopping element, the two Kansas City locations would be two entirely different projects.
“There would be more entertainment than St. Joseph incorporates,” Mr. Harpool said. “It’s very, very early. There are lots of pieces to the puzzle.”
