On the scene: Revved up with reviews and weekend rock
by Blake Hannon

Let’s face it. Yours truly can’t see (or afford to purchase tickets to) every show he wants to see. Luckily, this week I got by with a little help from my friends.

News-Press reporter Clinton Thomas managed to make the trek to St. Louis on Wednesday to catch Radiohead. And lifestyles editor, a.k.a. my boss, Jess DeHaven got to jet down to Kansas City to see The Police and Elvis Costello at the Sprint Center on Tuesday. The good news is they both have contributed reviews of those shows to “Sound, Scene, Delivered.” As for me, I got to review the new release from big-time indie rockers Death Cab for Cutie on “B-Sides.” You can read about all of these things on www.stjoenews.net. Pick your poison.

As for this weekend, I got a few ideas for you.

I know every time you read my column you probably wonder how much The Rendezvous is slipping me under the table, since I am constantly plugging their shows. No payola here folks! Regardless, I can’t help but want to plan my weekend around their two nights of music this weekend. Spacious rockers The Life and Times will perform with the hard and heavy Hundred Years War tonight, while soulful rockers John Henry and the Engine get down with the avante garde rock of The Waystation May 17. Both shows start at 10 p.m. and cover is $3 each night.

If you would like to see even more bands than that — in St. Joseph, all in one day — Magoon’s is having its first Fish Fry, and they’re cooking it up with plenty of live music from the likes of Tracy Huffman, Early Brothers Band, Jason Riley, Chris Jamison with Johnny Garcia and Ben Green from noon to midnight May 17. Cost is $8 in advance and $10 at the door.

For a little more refined entertainment, you could see the Fountain City Brass Band at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Potter Hall at Missouri Western for $10 to $12 .

If you are looking for a laugh and want to see a sister act, RRT’s “Nunsense 2: The Second Coming” will be putting on its last performances at 8 p.m. tonight and May 17 and 2 p.m. May 18. For more information, check the calendar.

If you want to make your weekend a long one, you could go see ‘80s alternative rock icons The Cure at 7 p.m. May 19 at the Starlight Theatre in KC. If you would rather see suplexes instead of gothy love songs, WWE Raw is coming to Kansas City at 7 p.m. May 19 at Kemper Arena.

Now, if they could only combine the two events, say, put The Cure’s Robert Smith in a steel cage match with Batista, that would help me embrace wrestling again. Don’t count Robert Smith out. He did defeat Barbara Streisand on “South Park.”
