JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Lindsay Vollmer’s first race at the Class 2 Track and Field Championships produced a state meet record. The Hamilton freshman could only enjoy it momentarily.

Vollmer finished in 14.71 seconds during the first preliminary heat for the 100-meter hurdles Friday afternoon at Dwight T. Reed Stadium, topping Precious Selmon’s 2006 time of 15.04. Unfortunately for Vollmer, Selmon is still a junior at Crystal City and ran a blistering 14.12 in the second heat — the second fastest time in state meet history, all classes.

“It was kind of sucky,” Vollmer said, “but it’ll just make me run harder (today) and try to get it back.”

Hamilton’s freshman phenom also celebrated her first state title, after she cleared 5-foot-4 in the high jump. Vollmer and Dixon’s Lisa Vengels were the final competitors at 5-4, and Vengels missed on her three attempts.

With two misses already at 5-4, Vollmer cleared on the final attempt to secure the title. She moved up to 5-5 but failed on all three of those attempts. It did nothing to dull her excitement.

“That was so exciting,” Vollmer said. “Just the adrenaline rush was amazing.”

Shortly after, Vollmer moved over to the 300-meter hurdles, where she posted the fastest prelim time in 45.65. Selmon won her heat in the 300s to post the second-best time, 45.85. Vollmer and Selmon will run side-by-side in the finals of those events today — not to mention the morning long jump competition, where they hold the top two qualifying distances.

“I’m really going to try to push it and get four golds,” Vollmer said. “It’ll be a good day; who knows what will happen. Precious is a great runner, and hopefully, we can push each other and make our personal bests even better.”

Vollmer’s 10 points in the high jump, coupled with medal-winning performances from senior Jordan Esry and junior Ashley Flook in the 800 and 1,600, have Hamilton atop the team standings. After five events, the Hornets have 28 points and sit 14 points ahead of North County Tech in defense of the first-ever girls state championship won last year.

Esry finished second in the 1,600 meters, moving up from the middle of the pack during the second half of the race, finishing in 5:18.68. Flook used the same strategy, and after being as far back as 14th, she recovered to finish fifth and earn five points.

Flook was even better in the two-lap 800. Also near the back to start, Flook came all the way back to fourth and finished in 2:22.87, four spots in front of Esry, who faded late into eighth.

“I wanted to medal, at least,” Flook said. “I’m proud of myself. Jordan’s always been there for me, and we both support each other.”

Maysville senior Heidi Johnson finished one spot behind Flook in the 800 to earn her first state medal. Esry defeated both at last week’s sectional.

Esry tries to bounce back in today’s 3,200, while Vollmer has a shot to score points in her three events. In addition, Esry and Flook run today as part of the three-time champion 4x800 team. Lacy Jones also made the finals of the 300 hurdles after she finished second to Selmon in Friday’s first prelim.

In the final preliminary race Friday, Hamilton’s 4x400 (Ashley Flook, Brooke Flook, Lauren Crawford and Eileen Greenwood) finished third in the second heat and also advanced to today’s final.
