HARRISONVILLE, Mo. — Arms dangling at her sides, Lindsey Prawitz sighed deeply and enjoyed her short-lived break.
Moments later, she was yanked back into action.
The LeBlond goalkeeper didn’t get much down time Tuesday at Memorial Stadium. Platte County’s blitzkrieg offense peppered the Golden Eagles to the tune of a 9-0 blowout in Class 1 sectional play.
Prawitz knew she was in for a long night from the get-go, as LeBlond packed six defenders into the goal area in an effort to slow the Pirates’ ferocious attack.
“It’s so different from the way we usually play,” LeBlond coach Ken Girard said. “We told Lindsey it was going to be hard for her and hoped it wouldn’t end up screwing her up.
“She understood that was the way we had to approach it.”
The strategy proved effective in the game’s early stages, as Platte County’s multitude of goal scorers couldn’t find their rhythm or each other around the net. But Whitney Smith scored the first of her two goals in the 11th minute and opened the floodgates.
Kelsey Knox sparked the rout with consecutive goals in the 14th and 15th minutes with a pair of well-struck balls.
“We got off to kind of a slow start, but we knew we’d start finishing,” Smith said.
Leading 5-0 at halftime, Platte County (25-4) looked primed to end the game short of its allotted 80 minutes. Junior Kaylee Smith, who eventually netted a hat trick, scored two more quick goals shortly into the second half — one on a free kick and one on a penalty kick.
The free kick especially seemed to disorient Prawitz, who attempted to give directions to teammates before watching the ball whistle past her.
“Sometimes with so many people around, I can’t see where the ball is or where it’s coming from,” Prawitz said. “But I mean, against a team this good, what can you do?”
The experienced junior keeper scooped up 15 saves and made sure the game went the distance against the Pirates for the second time this year. Platte County won the previous match 9-1.
LeBlond (12-10) couldn’t avoid the goose egg on its side of the scoreboard.
Kelly Walker had the best chance to score, when a deflection off Pirates’ keeper Missy Breedlove bounced right to her with 7 minutes remaining. Facing an open left side of the net, Walker missed well to the left.
Despite the disappointing finish, Girard said the team will still savor its first district championship and set its sights just as high next season. With a majority of their talent returning, the Golden Eagles hope to soar back into the playoffs next year.
“I think we all wanted to go one step more — or two or three or four,” Girard said. “We told the underclassmen, this is what it looks like. This is what we’re going for next year.”
Notre Dame de Sion 1
Smithville 0, 2 OT
The Warriors’ season came to a crushing end when Madde Adkins’ breakway goal skipped past Beth Hammons 2 ½ minutes into double overtime.
“We knew it would come down to one mistake, one break,” Smithville coach Jon Reed said. “They capitalized on theirs, and we didn’t get ours early.”
The Storm – last year’s Class 1 runners-up – advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal round in Excelsior Springs, where they will face Platte County.
After missing a couple early scoring chances, Smithville (20-5) played on its heels for much of the second half and overtime sessions. Whenever the Warriors managed to win a few balls, Sion’s speedy defenders quickly regained possession.
Sion (13-7-1) trumped the Warriors for the second time this season following an earlier victory on penalty kicks.
The game only advanced as far as it did, however, thanks to the heads-up efforts of Hammons between the pipes. In the game’s late stages, she twice punched the ball over the bar and gathered the ball in several high-traffic situations.
“We’ve got one of the best goalies in the state,” Reed said. “No easy balls go through her hands. We feel very confident with her back there.”
With a strong base of underclassmen back for another run next year, the Warriors could very well improve upon their triple-digit goal total and eclipse their school-record 20 wins.
