The last member of one of rock's most important, powerful and groundbreaking bands died on Nov. 12. Mitch Mitchell, drummer of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, died of natural causes at age 61.
While Jimi Hendrix was obviously the main attraction and essential element of the Jimi Hendrix Experience with his revolutionary guitar playing, flashy persona and electric stage presense, there was no denying that Mitchell himself was a star who belonged on stage with him. His fusion style -- part jazz, part rock -- was what helped to define the band's sound.
Mitchell rivaled the Who's Keith Moon with his the combination of unorthodox style and unpredictability but he never hit a cymbal or drum that sounded out of place. Listen to any number of live recordings or just go back to "Are You Experienced" and check out "Manic Depression" if you don't believe me.
A performer with the 6-string firepower of Hendrix needed a capable, complementary counterpart. With Mitchell, he had it -- and all of rock is better for it.
