October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Women, what's your first defense when it comes to breast cancer? The answer: monthly self exams!
Health experts recommend women begin doing monthly breast self exams at about age 20. But let's face it, if you're working, raising kids or taking care of family, it can be hard to take care of yourself. As a reminder, set a date for yourself! Mark the date in your blackberry, or your email calendar, and then just *do* it.
If you don't know how. Here are some general guidelines. First, stand in front of a mirror with your arms down at your sides, and just look at your breasts. Check for any visible changes - dimpling or bulging of the skin, redness or swelling. Then, do the same thing with your arms raised. Next, lie down and - keeping your fingers flat and together - feel your breast with your fingertips. Use a circular motion around the whole breast - from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and from your armpit to your cleavage. You're checking for any lumps. Then, do the same thing while standing or sitting. Some women find this easiest to do in the shower.
Remember, when it comes to breast cancer, early detection saves lives, so be sure to report any changes to your doctor.
