Domestic violence isn't only a serious issue nationally, but locally. A non-profit organization in St. Joseph is raising awareness.
It's the YWCA'S annual 'Take Back the Night', an event to remember domestic violence survivors and those who didn't. YWCA employees spent part of Monday
setting up for the event. The YWCA offers several services for victims of domestic violence. Kim Carroll, the Victims Service Director, says requested services from the YWCA have increased tremendously. In 2001, the organization housed an average of 11 people a day. In 2007, that number shot up to 45, all victims of domestic violence. Take Back the Night was held Monday evening. Those who attended took part in a candlelight vigil and empowerment march. The public also heard a testimony from a domestic violence survivor.
