Museum begins cemetery events Thursday

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

The St. Joseph Museums will offer two free educational programs about funeral architecture.

The first program will be “Fashionable Finales: Stories of St. Joseph Mausoleums and Those Who Built Them,” presented by Suzanne Lehr, a research associate with the museum. The talk begins at 7 p.m. Thursday in the museum meeting room.

The second program will be “Mausoleums as Elegant Homes for the Departed: Joplin’s Mt. Hope Cemetery,” presented by Dr. Brad Belk at 7 p.m. Oct. 23. Established more than 100 years ago, Mount Hope Cemetery contains the elaborate mausoleums that were built for the families of the leading zinc and lead mining businessmen of Missouri. Refreshments will be served.

The annual “Voices From the Past” interpretive walking tours of Mount Mora Cemetery will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 28, and at 7 p.m. Oct. 29. Tours begin with refreshments at the St. Joseph Museums, Inc. A new Mount Mora Cemetery event, the “Midnight Cemetery Crawl,” will begin promptly at 11:30 p.m. Oct. 31 at the gate of the cemetery. Pre-paid reservations are required for both “Voices From the Past” and the “Midnight Cemetery Crawl.”

Please call 232-8471 for more information on the programs or for Mount Mora Cemetery tours ticket information.
