Americans first

We may call ourselves Democrats and Republicans, but we are Americans first.

I support Barack Obama because turbulent times require steady leadership and national unity.

In order to resolve our economic crisis, balance the federal budget, end the war in Iraq responsibly and keep America safe, we need to change the way Washington works. Barack Obama is promising real change — not more of the same failed policies of George W. Bush as supported by John McCain.

Barack Obama supports responsible tax cuts for middle-class Americans and working families. John McCain is calling for expanded tax cuts for large corporations and the wealthiest Americans — adding trillions to a record deficit.

Barack Obama understands that a go-it-alone foreign policy makes us less safe. He will work with our allies and use strong, direct diplomacy to take out al-Qaida, contain Iran and end the war in Iraq.

Barack Obama won’t let special interests and their Washington lobbyists drown out the voices of regular Americans. He has shown that by building a broad movement of bipartisan support — and that is how he will govern. His ability to attract Democratic, Republican and independent voters is a testament to his broad appeal that will carry over in his governance.

Barnes’ record shows that she just doesn’t get it

Former big city mayor Kay Barnes has been all over Northwest Missouri lately. She would like you to think she is just another country gal who understands the problems that we face up here. I live in the 6th District and have worked in Kansas City for 25 years, and I can tell you she doesn’t get it.

Kay Barnes served two terms as mayor and likes to tell everyone about all the good things she did for Kansas City. You know, things like the Sprint Center and the Power & Light District. Impressive, yes, but only a small part of K.C. One only needs to drive a few blocks south of there to see what Kansas City really is like.

What Barnes really has done for Kansas City is leave the city with a huge budget deficit and crumbling infrastructure. Under her administration the streets used to be covered with metal plates for months on end. Rather than taking care of the average citizens, she was taking care of wealthy businessmen and special interests. Money was diverted from police, sewer and other essentials to be paid out in the form of tax increment financing deals that made her rich lawyer friends very happy.

She did nothing about the high crime rate and the mass exodus of small businesses out of Kansas City.

She now goes by the name of Kay Cronkite Barnes to emphasize her local ties. But we knew her as Mayor Kay Waldo Barnes, the typical limousine liberal. Why the name changes? Simple, she is following the same model that worked so well for Claire McCaskill two years ago. Claire convinced enough regular folks that she was just like them to narrowly defeat Jim Talent for the Senate. Kay is trying to do the same even though she only has lived in our district for a few years.

Liberal Democrats like Nancy Pelosi and other left-wing groups attack Sam Graves and present Kay Barnes as the solution to our problems. In one mailing, there is a page dedicated to all the “pork” that Congressman Graves has supported. But someone has not done his homework, as one of those projects is the C-130J, a newer version of the C-130 transports that we see flying around all the time. Kay and her pals may think that is pork, but residents of St. Joseph recognize it as an essential tool for our Air National Guard.

With all the uncertainty we face in our economy today, it’s best to have a congressman who is in touch. Sam Graves was one of the few who stood up to oppose the $700 billion bailout for Wall Street. Kay would like you to believe that she would stand up for you too, but her record in Kansas City proves otherwise.

Mr. Permut,
Please stop being so naive. Obama would do what suits Obama. He could care less about you, your family, or any other so-called average American. he is in it to make a name for himself and that's it.
Start taxing these "wealthy" (>$250K/yr) business owners more and watch them start shutting their doors and putting people out of work....then what? These supposedly rich people are not the enemy, they are the ones who employ people and pay their salaries and they are the base of our economy. You don't know what you are asking for going after them. You folks are just not thinking this through. You are just getting caught up in the hype and the Obama lie.

Someone woke up a little cranky this morning.

Kudos to Rax and his prescient comments. We watched Obama tell the plumber that he was going to face higher taxes because Obama wants "to spread the wealth." The plumber did not appear to be very impressed with this explanation and who could blame him? So we know part of Obama's economic plan is to punish the producers and reward the slugs. The other part of the equation is his plan to increase taxes on holders of capital. Higher corporate taxes will reduce investment in plants, equipment and payroll, cut dividend returns to investors, and result in higher consumer prices which in turn will reduce the competiveness of our businesses and send more of them out of the country. Higher capital gain taxes will reduce the effective use of capital because poorer performing assets will not be liquidated with the holders facing a punitive capital gains tax rate. Also, our capital can easily be transferred to other countries where it would be more welcome and of course jobs will go with the capital. Just another view of Obama's disasterous economic plan.

Orlandor,
I am not cranky at all, in fact I am in a great mood. I just wish some other folks would wake up and see what is going on around them rather than just what they see and hear on television..

Liberals are such an unhappy lot, but they are wrong to assume everyone else should share their "black cloud" outlook on life.

rax - i couldnt agree with you more... i also wish people would wake up and realize what's going on... McCain is not qualified to run this country. He may have a military background, but that won't make you a good president. We need someone who is going to make decisions, not ride others coat tails. Obama is a very intelligent man... and he has the smarts to run this country. say what you want (and i'm sure you'll have some goodness to say), but Obama is going to be the next President. I hope you are man or woman (not sure your gender and i don't want to assume anything) to support that president.

ps... does your name have anything to do with the old rax restaurant? i loved that place!

i got the mail piece labeled "pork projects" as well,a nd then turned it over and saw those C-130s right on the back also. First thing I thought was, well I guess Barnes doesn't want any votes coming from the 139th. Curse, she would have probably had a hard time getting most of those anyways, since they have a conference room over there named after Sam Graves.

Posted by m_chuzzlewit on October 15, 2008 at 8:31 a.m. (Suggest removal)

What kind of "smarts" does it take to espouse a platform of taking one person's property or wealth and giving it to another. That has been tried by all sorts of "isms" and has only worked at the point of a gun. The one new factor inserted this time around is the tinge of black liberation theology heard from the Rev. Wright and others.

Space didn't permit me to go into all the reasons why we don't want Barnes up here. However I should have included her running KC as a sanctuary city during her terms. She suddenly is trying to convince NW Missourians that she is anti illegal immigration. Fact, she did nothing about the illegal problem in KC and she will do nothing about it in our district. If you want unemployment to go down in our area, try deporting illegal immigrants and give those jobs back to Americans.

How any one can think obama is going to do anything for anyone but himself is beyond me!! Look at all the pork he got for Chicago. Also his commercials now state there will be no TAX INCREASES for people making under $25,000. Before he was promising TAX CUTS! He will put this country in more ruin. HE HAS NOT LEADERSHIP ABILITY just a big mouth!!!

Posted by shockedandamazed on October 15, 2008 at 9:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)

People need to wake up, Obama is not the answer. He has made it where he is by riding the shirt tails of some funny fellows and now says he knew nothing. Not to dish Reagan but that boat only floats once.
Missourians should be more aware than that. He is promising nothing but the same thing we just voted on. Raising the minimum wage, although it was a good idea, it did not fix the problem. The large corporations just raised their prices to cover the increase. The same will happen by taxing the people who make 250,000 to 500,000. Most are your small business owners.
I am a small business owner that skirts around that number. Do I get to take home that amount, NO. I have to pay taxes on the money the business profits even if I re-invested it in the business. It's not cash it's inventory, it's machines.
The answer is motivation. I am one of the few small companies left that still offer true benefits. I know this by talking with my banker, accountant and insurance providers. I offer insurance with a $20 co-pay and only a $250 deductible, now I pay dearly for that but it is a motivation to keep good employees. I match up to 3% in a 401k, I have paid vacations and if something pops up and you have to leave we still understand. I feel it is my responsibility to my employees to offer these things, although every year it gets harder. My profits are dropping, however my benefits would be the last to sacrifice due to I to was once only a "middle class" earner.
If Obama wins and goes after the upper middle class, to redistribute wealth. I will have to look at my goals and values, versus feeding my family. It makes me sad.
Offer more incentives to make other employers offer what use to be a basic employee packages.
Obama needs to raise his target group on re-distribution of wealth or as the republicans have been saying "this recession will become a depression".

ninja,
No the name is not because of the restaurant although you're right, they did have good food. It is actually a characters name in one of my favorite old movies. Although I do agree that a President does not necessarily have to have a military background, I do believe it is very important simply because he will better "understand the way things work" within the military. He understands jargon, processes, tactics, etc. It is like a person becoming police chief without first having the experience of being a patrol officer. You just don't understand how things work in the proverbial trenches.

As far as Obama being an intelligent man, I won't dispute that. I will however forever dispute his ability, integrity, honesty and loyalty to this country. Obama is also a terrific speaker but so was Hitler. NO, I AM NOT SAYING OBAMA IS THE NEXT HITLER... I am simply using that analogy to show that a smooth talker can say anything and if the mood is right people will believe it to be true.

Too many people have jumped on the Obama bus without knowing anything about what he stands for or what the impact of his supposed changes will be. It always sounds good to hear that you are going to get tax cuts, get refunds, get new progams, etc... but nobody takes the time to think of where the money will come from to support all of this. After reading some of the comments in this column I believe that some people just think that there is a big pile of money on the oval office floor ready to be handed out. This money would come from hard working people, people who already have to give up too much of their own money. People who have worked hard to get what they have. People who have put themselves through college, sometimes working multiple jobs to be able to make a good life for their family. THIS is where the money will come from for Obama to use to create even more worthless programs that will do nothign but throw more money at people who will not work their way out of debt, who will not get a second job, who will not do without to inprove their own lives.

People need to understand that Obama will NOT be able to implement his plan without causing harm to the very people who make up the backbone of this country. Obama would be a very bad choice for President of this country and I certainly hope before people decide this guy is the answer that they actually think about not only what he is claiming he will do, but asking themselves exactly HOW he can do it.

Good grief, I hope this monitor doesn't run out of ink......

McCain/Palin'08....the RIGHT choice.

that's a nice bunch of words rax, but unfortunately all you're doing is speculating what might happen with Obama's plans. you can't predict the future and neither can i.. that is why we have to gather as much info as we can about the candidates and make a choice... you have your opinion and i have mine... and there's no way to know if either of us are right until we get a few years down the road into the next presidents term. so, thanks for your speech, but it's only speculation. i hope you and the others are going to respect and support Obama when he becomes our next president.

OBAMA/BIDEN... THE ONLY TRUE CHOICE

It's not predicting the future. It's the same as, I don't have to get burnt twice to realize that will hurt.

Posted by Rax on October 15, 2008 at 11:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Good grief man, it isn't speculation it is simple logic, the money has to come from somewhere. The folks he is promising to help don't have anything to give. What majic beanstalk will all of this money come from?

I don't believe I will have to worry about Obama anyway because when it comes time to actually cast their votes, I have faith that Americans are not gullible enough to fall for Obamas hype.

McCain/Palin '08

Posted by ninja_man on October 15, 2008 at 12:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

money, money, money... greed seems to run this country, huh? anyways, how is McCain going to pay for his plan to buy back all of the home loans and refinance them for people who are living in homes they could never afford in the first place? and how is that fair for those of us who live within our means and don't need a bailout?

Posted by m_chuzzlewit on October 15, 2008 at 12:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The $750 billion bailout is a fait accompli and will be paid for by currency devaluation (inflation) irrespective of which candidate is elected. The first $250 billion installment has been pressed on what major banks are left to re-capitalize their credit flow. The next $100 billion is available to the Treasury Secretary to use at his discretion. The remaining funds require re-authorization by the 111th Congress which will be under Democrat control. My estimate is that McCain's buyback plan as such would never come to fruition, but foreclosure relief in some form will probably result from the use of the remaining bailout funds.

Posted by m_chuzzlewit on October 15, 2008 at 1:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

shockedandamazed...according to ninja you should do it out of respect. But, will Obama still respect YOU in the morning?

What most distinguishes the candidate is charater. I have been reading about the canidates. Both had good things about them, until McCain choice of Sarah Palin, and this seem to reveal McCain's cynicaism. In choosing her, McCain committed an act of breathtaken heedlessness and irresponsibilty. Palin has no business being the backup to a President as she doesn't have the most basic issues of the day.
I have been a Republican, but now I wonder about being that "no matter what!"

Posted by shockedandamazed on October 15, 2008 at 2:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'll agree with the character part being important, which is why Obama is not my choice.
And what issues do you not think Palin gets?

Posted by apmastrangelo on October 15, 2008 at 4:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Mr. Permut - Guess we are going to have to agree to disagree on the subject of Obama.
I initially took a hard look at supporting him but as a variety of issues evolved could just not do so.
Lets start with the basic issue of judgement. The Rev. Wright matter was the first thing resulting in concern. Obama made conflicting statements about what he did and did not know about statements from Rev. Wright, ultimately admitting he did know of the controversial America remarks.
Having been a member of the same church and having a close association with Wright for more than 20 years certainly raises a red flag as to judgement.
In addition and during both the primary and current race, it also troubles me that Obama has changed positions on many policy issues I see important. I will not attempt to list each of them but the number is significant.
I have stated several times that neither candidate is truly among the selections we should have given the state of the country. Considering the total picture, however, I believe McCain is better qualified and has the tenacity in dealing with the realities faced.

If obama gets elected what makes you think he will live to serve out his term??? Biden wants to be president one way or another!

Posted by Margaret on October 15, 2008 at 5:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Will he not live -- is that a threat from the Rebulicans? I think the fear is our self. Obama knows what he has always had being a black man.

Posted by momswisher on October 16, 2008 at 12:13 a.m. (Suggest removal)

OK someone has to say this, guess I will...
Margaret :: Obama is not a black man any more than he is a white man. He is bi racial. He uses the black man thing to his advantage. Except when he was in New Hampshire it was more to his advantage to be white so he was very fast in pointing out his mother was white and his white grandfather was a white x military. He wants it both ways.

The money will come from the 700billion bail out already passed. And why them and not you?? If your neighborhood starts having houses that are empty, foreclosed on, it will bring down your property value real fast. So it is for you too.

Posted by MichaelH on October 16, 2008 at 7:30 a.m. (Suggest removal)

If you own a home, why do you care about property value going down?

It ALWAYS goes back up - take the chance to buy up some of those houses in your neighborhoods.

I still think it's funny you guys are STILL bickering over who is lying and who is not. They're all lying. It is a prerequisite for political campaigns.

If you've been smart and lived within your means I'm guessing your credit is fine. Go buy some houses and quit whining.

with everyone concernd about the tax issue maybe mcain is thinking about the middle class more than you think he is if these so called big companies he his wanting to give the tax cuts to can keep there doors open and not close down because they got the tax cuts this means the middle class wont be loosing thier jobs if you look at obamas tax cuts as a way to help middle class america your kidding yourselves with the economy the way it is do you think the big companies will stay here or go overseas like so many have already done yes mcain might be giving the companys an incentive to stay open here so everyone will benifit. think about it how many have laid off permentatly middle class america and how do you think the tax cuts will help them if they dont have jobs...
