Five things you don't know about Benton coach Tabor
by Ross Martin
Thursday, September 4, 2008

Everyone knows Matt Tabor coached four years at Bishop LeBlond, and he graduated from Benton, where he returned as head coach this season. Everyone also knows he’s following in the footsteps of his legendary father, Don, who coached at both LeBlond and Benton. But what don’t you know about Matt Tabor?

Known for his football prowess, he was a two-sport athlete in college, playing No. 1 singles on the tennis team.

After graduating from Benedictine, Tabor spent a short time in the northern part of United States as a missionary, which made him want to work with kids.

Matt and his twin brother Mike nicknamed each other when they were younger. Mike woke up and told Matt to call him “Dean,” and Matt responded by wanting to be called “Poops.” The nicknames have stuck well into their adult years.

Matt claims to know the lyrics to more than 25,000 country songs and uses those to perform good karaoke. He won the 1997 Platte County Fair singing contest and has sang in more than a dozen weddings.

Insists he always knew he would marry Kelly Grable, who he has known his entire life. That came to pass in December 2006.
