Free haircuts for kids offered
by Alonzo Weston
Thursday, September 4, 2008

Sheila Morahnwanna-Gilbert knows the power of a haircut. After all, she’s a licensed barber.

“Anytime you give someone special attention, it makes them feel good,” she said.

From 7 a.m. Saturday until her clippers get tired or the heads run out, Mrs. Morahnwanna-Gilbert will cut the hair of children ages 5 through 15 for free outside Heaven’s Road Church at 1824 Angelique St.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. Refreshments will be provided.

“This is part of my outreach ministry,” Mrs. Morahnwanna-Gilbert said. “It’s to do whatever it takes to give kids motivation and to feel good about themselves.”

Mrs. Morahnwanna-Gilbert and her husband, Kenzie Gilbert, also run a Food for Kids foods ministry for youth at the location. The Houston natives created the program to give free lunches to Midtown area youths during the summer.
