Seinfeld and Microsoft: Not so funny
New ads confuse more than entertain or inform
by Lacey Storer
Friday, September 5, 2008

So far the Seinfeld-Microsoft advertising scheme is not going so well. The first ad featuring Jerry Seinfeld — part of a $300 million advertising campaign to combat the uber-popular Mac ads — debuted last night during the NFL kickoff game.

Reviews for the ad, which showed Seinfeld helping Bill Gates pick out a pair of shoes at the mall and didn’t mention Windows Vista at all, were less than favorable. Ad critics called it “pathetic,” “underwhelming,” and “not that funny.”

That’s not exactly an ad that’s going to give the Mac vs. PC ads competition.

The company that came up with the ad is saying that the first one is just a teaser to get people talking. Well, in that case, mission accomplished. Maybe the next ad will be meant to get people laughing.
