St. Joseph Habitat for Humanity will host a Local Celebrity Build Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at 21st and Charles streets.
Locals celebrities will help volunteers build a four-bedroom home for a single mother of five children at the site. Bob the Builder, the cartoon celebrity, will be available for the kids.
The list of celebrities include: boxers Rob Calloway and Galen Brown; St. Joe Now’s Bob Heater and Lindie Patton; former Harlem Globetrotter Larry “Gator” Rivers; State Reps. Ed Wildberger and Martin Rucker and Mr. Rucker’s wife, LaVell; Mayor Ken Shearin; and KQTV’s Bridget Blevins, Nathan Byrne, Nima Shaffe and Bob Schultz. Gregg Lynn, disc jockey for KKJO 105, will have a live remote from 10 a.m. to noon at the location.
“We’re hoping to raise more awareness about Habitat and what we do in this community,” said Jamie McPhail, St. Joseph Habitat for Humanity co-interim director.
Habitat for Humanity is asking for public help to raise $3,000 to raise the roof on the new home. Habitat board members will be on hand to take donations.
“I think the whole thing is just basically to see the celebrity builders and Bob the Builder,” Ms. McPhail said. “We want people to come by. Even if they give change, that all adds up and helps. Of course, they don’t have to give money.”
Since 1996, St. Joseph Habitat for Humanity has partnered with St. Joseph families to build 36 homes.
Currently the not-for-profit organization is working on three homes, with a goal to build six more in 2008.
“We’re such a volunteer-based organization,” Ms. McPhail said. “Without our volunteers, we wouldn’t be successful.”
