Workers at Smurfit Stone Container will vote today on a new labor contract.
About 90 workers at the plant are represented by the Graphic Communication International Union. They will vote on a proposed four-year contract, said Byron Austin, president of Local 235.
The existing contract expired in March and the union and the company have been negotiating a new one, Mr. Austin said.
Wages and working conditions are primary concerns for the workers.
“I would like to see fairness on both sides,” said Moses Hicks, who has worked at Smurfit Stone for 14 years.
The factory on Lower Lake Road manufactures corrugated boxes.
“Economics is always a struggle, especially with what’s been happening this year with the cost of living,” Mr. Austin said.
The vote will take place at 10 a.m. today and union members may choose to accept or reject the contract and may vote to go on strike if the contract is not approved.
