South Harrison finds big-play threat in Knott
by Ross Martin
Thursday, September 25, 2008

South Harrison coach Caleb Obert finds different ways to get Danan Knott the ball.

Some of them Obert doesn’t even draw up.

During last week’s 39-20 win against Maysville, Knott scored four touchdowns four different ways and racked up more than 200 all-purpose yards. One of the touchdowns came as a complete surprise to Obert.

Knott — a senior wide receiver and defensive back — lined up as punter and bobbled the snap before taking off on a run. He scored from 42 yards out on the busted play.

“I was actually turned talking to another player,” Obert said, “and I hear a little roar from the crowd. By the time I looked back, he was 15 yards down field, so by that time I was pretty excited.”

Knott has emerged as the Bulldogs big play threat during the first four weeks.

His increase in touches and production has correlated with South Harrison’s current three-game winning streak entering today’s game with Hamilton. Not had just 50 yards of offense during a 20-6 opening-week loss to Princeton. He also accounted for the Bulldogs’ only touchdown.

Since then, Knott has upped his totals to exactly 300 yards of total offense, while scoring nine of South Harrison’s 15 touchdowns.

That’s left Obert with a task in his first year as head coach at the school he graduated from in 2003. Obert’s using screens, reverses, short passes and deep passes to get Knott touches.

“It’s a new offense,” Obert said. “I knew I would have to slowly insert stuff. I knew coming in Danan was a play-making guy. I just had to find what would suit him.”

Still sneakin’ by

Sabetha moved to 3-0, 2-0 in Big 7 play with a win against Nemaha Valley.

None of the Blue Jays victories have been impressive, but they all count in the win column.

The season started with a tough 16-13 win against Class 4A Wamego. Class 3A Sabetha then needed overtime to top Class 4A Jefferson County West 6-0 during a Friday night filled with driving rain storms.

The 13-7 win against Class 4A Nemaha Valley leaves them unbeaten headed into another Class 4A Big 7 showdown with Hiawatha.

Offense has been the slow point with the Blue Jays averaging just 147 yards of offense per game with only 21 yards passing total — all in the win against Jefferson County West.

Not impressed

No area Kansas teams have been represented in the top five polls of the Wichita Eagle or Topeka Capital-Journal through two weeks.

Sabetha and Troy are the closest.

Both are listed as “others” outside of the top five in both publications, the preeminent rankers in the state. Troy is 3-0 in Class 2-1A with an impressive win against Class 3A Pleasant Ridge.

Pass happy

Class 1 District 16 is shaping up as a local air raid.

Consisting of North Platte, West Platte, Mid-Buchanan and East Buchanan, the starting quarterbacks of those teams are all ranked in the top 10 among area 11-man schools, including the top three.

West Platte’s Eric Humes — first-team all-state last year — leads that group at 829 yards, 14 more than North Platte’s Wes Johnson, who leads the area with 13 touchdown passes. East Buchanan’s Seth Plackemeier is more than 100 yards back at 705 with seven touchdown passes.

Mid-Buchanan’s Drew Gray “lags behind” with 412 yards, but leads the pack with a yards per completion rate of nearly 20 yards on 21 completions.
