The St. Joseph Downtown Farmers Market will not be open this year.
The market, which has been at various locations for about 40 years, ended its last season in September 2008. The market's organizer, Shirley Smith, said the closing would be permanent. Ms. Smith had been involved in the market since its inception.
Customers can still get fresh produce at the Pony Express Farmers Market in the East Ridge Village Shopping Plaza on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

i made overtures to the city about opening the downtown farmer's market. the city does have a rather restrictive onus of a prohibitive insurance umbrella and requirement of separate tax id for vendors. also, just as i was beginning to get vendors and to obtain insurance i was warned off last year because the city told me that they would absolutely be tearing up the felix street square for the final piece of the downtown cip improvements. that never happened. i assume that work will take place this year?
who in the heck ever heard of a farmer's market out in a shopping plaza? its just plain stupid, imho.
