There’s a long way for Sierra Michaelis to go, but the incredible Mercer freshman already sits on pace to surpass some remarkable records.
Through 15 games (prior to Tuesday night’s matchup with Winston), the 5-foot-10 guard had 441 points, an average of 29.4 per game, through 15 games. Miller’s Hannah Wilkerson, currently a senior, set the state freshman record at 746 and 26.64 in 2006-2007.
Michaelis’ numbers actually decreased this past week after she scored “only” 12 and 24 points, respectively, in semifinal and championship victories at the Meadville Tournament. Mercer won both to up its season record to 15-0.
Michaelis could break one or both of Wilkerson’s freshman marks, and that would put her on an unprecedented path.
Wilkerson stands 44 points shy of Melissa Grider’s career record for points scored of 3,211. Allen Vaughan documented Wilkerson’s story Tuesday for the online-only magazine Tag, based out of Springfield, Mo.
Obviously, Michaelis has the rest of this year and a whole career to worry about.
But regardless, Wilkerson’s pursuit of the record shows the select company Michaelis has put herself with through the early part of her freshman season. Wilkerson and Miller played Liberal on Tuesday night where she took the first crack at potentially breaking the record.
