Game Blog: Savannah at Lafayette

The Lafayette and Savannah junior varsity teams put on the best show on Tuesday.

The teams put on a high-scoring, entertaining regulation with the Fighting Irish erasing an early 10-point deficit.

And that was before the teams went to triple overtime.

Central took a two point lead in the first overtime with a layup but with only 2.8 seconds left, the Savages responded with a nifty inbounds play that resulted in the game-tying layup as time expired, sending the game to a second overtime.

Neither team scored in the second overtime with several close shot attempts rolling in and out for Savannah.

With Savannah up by two with under 15 seconds to go in the third overtime, Lafayette’s Austin Day swished the game winning 3-pointer with 5.5 seconds remaining.

The Savages didn’t have a miracle answer this time and the Irish celebrated at midcourt.

Watching Lafayette freshman Jeff Leeson it’s easy to see why he made the varsity team.

But at times its also easy to see why he’s a freshman.

Leeson had two big blocks against the Savages in his first trip into the game off the bench. With his big 6-foot-5 frame, he set a couple of nice picks for point guard Tim Nelson and high scorer Taylor Deayon.

But then there was a time of two when he looked lost when the team was running a play and he was found out of position. In the last 30 seconds of the game with the victory secured, Leeson found himself right under the basket, although he was guarded. Instead of taking the ball up to the rim, he tried to kick the ball out but instead threw the ball to his Irish teammates sitting on the bench.
