Police investigate incident involving weapons
by St. Joseph News-Press
Wednesday, July 30, 2008

Police are investigating an incident involving a pistol, baseball bats and a pregnant woman Monday night on Doniphan Avenue.

St. Joseph Police Department officers arrived on the scene at about 10:30 p.m. with guns drawn and took four individuals into custody for questioning in the vicinity of 2409 Doniphan Ave.

One individual lived with a pregnant woman but wasn’t the father, police Cmdr. Jim Connors explained Tuesday. The alleged father arrived with his brother at the house and they brought baseball bats, Mr. Connors said. The man who lives on Doniphan had a pistol in his waistband and words were exchanged, he said. A punch may have been thrown and then weapons were grabbed, Mr. Connors said.

“A weapon was recovered at the scene but its unknown if it was used in a threatening manner at this time,” Officer Steve Smith said.

Mr. Connors said the man carrying the gun waved it, suggesting that ball bats weren’t appropriate. All parties agreed to de-escalate by voluntarily putting the weapons down, he said. A few punches were thrown before police arrived, he added.

Three individuals were released at the scene and one man was taken to the Buchanan County Jail for further questioning. The investigation was ongoing Tuesday, but no charges had been filed. No one was hurt.

Wow. The gun was actually used to "de-escalate" a situation?

Fighting is natural, weapons are for wars. I'd prefer to have neither but that's what we've got and I'd rather keep them seperate.

Poncho, why dont you explain? Who are "Them People" ?
Who said anything about gangs? Sounds more like potential Jerry Springer material. If I had two guys at my front door with baseball bats, Im not going to ask them what time the game is. They probably are going to try and hurt you. I cant understand why the gun was in his waistband?????

It would have been great if the gun slid down his pants, went off and blew his.....big toe off.now that would have been a story.Never bring a bat to a gun fight.
