Maryville girls hammer Stockton, advance to state semifinals
SEDALIA, Mo. — Maryville knew it was going to be the Lion again on Saturday. Before the Spoofhounds’ Class 3 quarterfinal game against Stockton, the players said they were going to be the lions and Stockton would be the lambs. March has come in like a Lion for the Spoofhounds, and that trend continued Saturday with a 46-30 win against Stockton to advance to the state semifinals for the first time since 1981. Maryville has beat each of its five opponents in March by at least 16 points.
Hogan Prep ends Maryville boys' season
SEDALIA, Mo. — With a flash, Hogan Prep intimidated Maryville and forced the Spoofhounds into eight quick turnovers. Maryville settled down, but the intimidation never left the back of its minds as the Rams beat the Spoofhounds 54-45 in the Class 3 boys quarterfinal matchup at Smith-Cotton High School.
Spoofhound boys beat Lafayette County
With one slam of the court, the Maryville crowd gasped, and Nic Mattson lay against the ground with the sound of his head hitting the Civic Arena floor echoing around the rafters early in the first quarter. The Spoofhounds then had to win the game without one of their starters, and they succeeded by beating Lafayette County 44-33 in the Class 3 sectional game at Civic Arena. Mattson returned to the locker room shortly after the injury and returned to the bench later with a towel around his head and in obvious discomfort.
Braymer outruns King City boys
After last season’s heartbreaking loss in sectionals to Mound City, Braymer knew it didn’t want to feel that pain again. The seniors who went through the loss last season came up with a saying at the beginning of the year that the Baja Men would be proud of: “Who let the dogs out” became the Bobcats theme, and they don’t care if the song went out of style five years ago. “It means we want to come out aggressive and be in control of where we end up,” senior Clayton Brown said. The Bobcats started out aggressive led by John Haley’s six points in a 12-1 run to start the game in Braymer’s 58-29 runaway victory against King City. Haley did a good job penetrating the gaps of the Wildkats’ zone defense and got two steals leading to baskets.
March means Jefferson heats up
Jefferson coaches Tyler Pedersen and Tim Jermain notice a difference in their teams once the calendar flips to March. “Tim and I talk about how the level of focus increases a bit,” Pedersen said. “It’s that time of the year. We just see another level in some of the players and some of the team activities.” The state basketball playoffs in March is an annual tradition for Conception Junction, Mo., with a population under 250. Most of the town will make the trek across U.S. Highway 136 to Bearcat Arena in Maryville, Mo., to watch the Eagles tonight. The girls take on undefeated Mercer at 6 and the boys face North Harrison at 7:45 with the hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals on Saturday.
King City battles past South Holt
ROSENDALE, Mo. — Exhaustion came over King City center Wade Bryson when the buzzer rang. The fatigue showed in the 6-foot-8 senior’s body when he barely cracked a small smile and high-fived teammates as the purple-clad crowd behind the bench erupted, celebrating the Wildkats’ first district title since 2005 with a 58-50 win against South Holt in the Class 1 District 14 championship game at North Andrew High School.
Jefferson boys return to playoffs
RAVENWOOD, Mo. — Jefferson silenced the doubters. The doubters who thought that after losing all five starters, four to graduation and Jacob Stoll to a season-ending injury, that the Eagles couldn’t capture yet another district title. Jefferson did just that beating Craig 53-45 at Northeast Nodaway High School in the Class 1 District 16 championship game.
Eagles outlast Jays for district championship
RAVENWOOD, Mo. — In the locker room with the Jefferson logo on the door, screams and cheers rang out into the hallway. In the other locker room separated by just a bathroom sat 12 crushed Northeast Nodaway girls. One postgame picture was all smiles; the other filled with tears. Jacquline Schulte’s contested layup attempt as time expired hit off the backboard just above the square and fell on the other side of the rim giving Jefferson a 46-44 win and its second consecutive Class 1 District 16 title over Northeast Nodaway.
Maryville beats Plattsburg on glass
PLATTSBURG, Mo. — Just call Maryville seniors Adam Thompson and Keenan Joiner the trashmen. In the Spoofhounds’ 73-33 Class 3 District 16 semifinal win against Plattsburg, the duo combined to grab rebound after rebound on both ends of the floor especially on the offensive end in the second and third quarters.
Hamilton dominates down low vs. Tarkio
ALBANY, Mo. — Don’t miss your bunnies. That’s one thing that drives Hamilton nuts, and that’s what Hamilton coach Dave Prather says over and over again. “It’s so annoying,” junior Lindsay Vollmer said. “It means don’t miss your shots down low.” Hamilton usually doesn’t miss its bunnies and didn’t in its 70-29 win against Tarkio in the Class 2 District 16 semifinals. The Hornets play St. Joseph Christian at 6 p.m. Friday at Albany High School for the championship.
