Cotter takes his wings to state post

The No. 1 man at the 139th Airlift Wing will step down this month and transfer to the state headquarters in Jefferson City, Mo. Col. Stephen Cotter, who assumed command of the Wing in August 2003, will become the No. 2 man in command of the Missouri Air National Guard. Mr. Cotter is a 33-year veteran of the Air Guard, with more than 7,000 flying hours. He will remain in the area and largely commute to Jefferson City. “He’s got a good sense about the challenges facing the Air National Guard and the Missouri Air National Guard,” said Brig. Gen. Craig McCord, commander of Missouri’s Air Guard. “His name popped right to the top and he’s got a good track record.”

Three St. Joseph museums planning family activities to kick off the Christmas holiday season on Dec. 6 found a way to stretch their dollars.
The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, St. Joseph Museums Inc. and Robidoux Row Museum were all independently planning family-oriented programs.
“Breakfast with Santa” and a gingerbread house workshop for children were on the art museum’s agenda. Staff at St. Joseph Museums Inc. created “Nature’s Noel,” a family craft workshop at the Wyeth-Tootle mansion as their Christmas offering. And the St. Joseph Historical Society had its annual tour of the Christmas rooms, designed by local businesses and families at the Robidoux Row Museum, to promote. Each of those museums has a limited advertising budget.

Clock is ticking on taxiway repairs

The city of St. Joseph waits as others decide what will be done about the crumbling taxiways at Rosecrans Memorial Airport. The city, working with the state, set aside $1.1 million of matching money for repairs, but it has to be spent before September 2009, said Mike Hurst, the airport manager. Rosecrans has a taxi path located east of the main runway that stretches about 8,300 feet from north to south and is used by all the light civilian and the heavy military aircraft. Back in 1994, workers installed a 7-inch layer of concrete on the airport taxi path over 14 inches of old concrete.

Police officers, sheriff’s deputies and security officers from Missouri Western State University went knocking on doors Monday, but it wasn’t to serve warrants.
Instead, the local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police believes Thanksgiving shouldn’t be a time when people go hungry; so they raised funds, bought food through America’s Second Harvest of Greater St. Joseph and contacted the St. Joseph School District for a list of families needing assistance. Officers loaded large boxes with all the food needed to make a great dinner, including the frozen bird, and headed out into the community at about 9 a.m. Monday.
Officer Scott Vanover’s first delivery ended up being a bit emotional.

State samples give Cameron’s water supply an OK, but doubts still exist. Thursday, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources released the results of a second round of testing from 10 Cameron homes and four Cameron public school sites. Water samples were collected in September. Additional samples of untreated water were taken at Grindstone Reservoir, which supplies city drinking water, and from a small lake at the local golf course. Thursday’s departmental press release stated that the September test results are similar to those taken in May, when the department tested both source water and finished water and found all samples well within standards.

But in the middle of World War II, it wasn’t a civilian airport. It was a busy military hub operated by the Army Air Corps with military planes descending and ascending at all hours.
The youngest of five brothers, Mr. Swartz was drafted out of the Pennsylvania coal fields, and he decided at an early age to leave the Rust Belt behind.

Saturday morning, 130 voters came to the Buchanan County Courthouse to vote and that was a record for a single morning, said Pat Conway, Buchanan County clerk. If the number of voters goes over 40,000 today, that will be a record, Mr. Conway said. And it looks like the county could break its record for absentee votes too, he said.
Turnout could be heavy enough that some voters may have to wait in line for 30 to 60 minutes during peak times at some of the larger polling places, Mr. Conway said. Peak times generally are from 6 to 8:30 a.m. and from 4 to 7 p.m.
