7 units respond to two-story house fire
St. Joseph firefighters responded to smoke coming from the rear of a two-story brick duplex at about 11 a.m. Tuesday. The occupants at 521 S. Ninth St. were able to escape safely and there were several pets in the home as well, said Paris Jenkins, battalion chief.

Braymer boys escape Jefferson charge, makes semifinal
Braymer escaped the Class 1 boys quarterfinal against Jefferson by the barest of margins on Saturday at MWSU Fieldhouse. Braymer’s John Haley fouled Clayton Schieber with 0.7 seconds left while the Jefferson sophomore guard attempted a potential tying 3-pointer. But Schieber missed all three attempts, and Braymer held off offensively starved Jefferson 48-45. Haley hit a 3-pointer to open the second-quarter scoring to break a tie, and the Bobcats never trailed again. Haley finished with a game-high 14 points.
Benton closes early due to water main break
Students at Benton High School got a jump start on the weekend Friday morning. The school closed at 10:45 a.m. because of a water main break in front of the building.
