Entitlements? (Where have we heard that word before?).
DONATED eight years of your life? You were there by choice and weren't paid at all in that time?
Personal needs? It's a JOB people, not a convenience. The COMPANY owns the job and determines what it is worth. If you don't like what the company feels like your job is worth, improve yourself and educate yourself for a better position at another company. Go into business for yourself!
Good luck on the HOPE and BELIEF for CHANGE at your company. Futher luck on explaining to your kids why Daddy or Mommy aren't working and why Christmas has been cancelled. Stay warm and stay safe on your picket line.

I have read with interest and sometimes amusement the comments on both sides of this issue, so here's my two cents (Can I borrow a penny? I'm a little short this week.)

*Yippee for those who choose to smoke. I'm sure there are "productive" (that is a very loose and subjective term) users out there, and there are also many stereotypical Spicoli's out there.

*If one has been incarcerated for non-violent possession, it is likely he/she did something else to get the attention of law enforcement in the first place. It might be something as minor as being a passsenger in a car that ran a yellow light, having a loud argument with a neighbor, or doing somersaults down the middle of a street dressed like Abe Vigoda while singing a medley of Bangles songs.

*Though debateable, marijuana is considered to be a gateway to the use of stronger drugs which leads to committing violent acts.

*Law enforcement agencies are charged with putting "bad guys" in jail. In some jurisdictions an officer may write a citation for minor possession. I do not know if that is an option in this area or not. If it is an option, it is reasonable to believe it has been done many times. If not, the officer is doing his/her job by locking someone up.

*In order to decriminalize marijuana usage, the Sheriff is not the one to lay heat on. That would be the legislators.

*To those who support usage: Do you want your children indulging? If one tests positive for usage in a pre-employment drug screen should they be denied a position? Will you be making "special" brownies this Thanksgiving <g>?

A Happy and SAFE Thanksgiving to all.

I commend the News Press on their endorsement of Senator McCain. Judging by many of the posts over the past months, I am guessing many will disagree.

The choice of his running mate was a brilliant marketing move. She can be an exciting and strong partner. However, I have reservations about her ability to lead the country. I hope that Governor Palin is not needed to step up to the Oval Office.

I am not going to waste space, Readers, or your time, about why Senator Obama will not get my vote. There are those who don't need to listen, and those that won't.

Just more proof that the "Empire" (yeah, right) lacks creativity, culture, class, imagination amd inspiration. Fortunately there are those that at least attempt to challenge the narrowmindedness inherent in the area.

That being said, it is Heartland that owns the walls that the art is hung on, therefore they get to say what should and shouldn't be on them. I question Ms. George's honesty and willingness to take responsibility when she said it was the Art Council's decision to not allow the pictures to go up. I would guess some higher-up at Heartland influenced that decision strongly.

Perhaps a banjo and John Deere exhibit would be more in line for the tastes of the area.

For some, facts have very little to do with their reality. It is frightening how this element of society continues to grow and grow and grow. It is almost like the ebola virus spreading. People, protect yourself from this disease by learning facts, not rhetoric. And yes, I am prepared for the names to be flung at me (lotsa tissues ready for the boo-hoos -- sarcasm for those too snapped to otherwise understand).

Anyone stupid enough to run a RR crossing that is activated deserves what comes to them. Trains will ALWAYS win in a collision with your vehicle.

A call I worked in another state involved a Mom late for an appointment who chose to try to beat a train. By some miracle, the baby in the ejected baby seat was fine, some 40-feet from the tracks. Mom was eventually okay, too, but her car was destroyed. Another few inches and I would have been putting two people into body bags.

A few other targets for blame:

A Democratic Congress that pushed loan companies to be "more fair" to lower income individuals and loosen minimal requirements for loans to be obtained.

Those who chose to sign loan agreements that they knew they couldn't keep up with. Yes, I know many were lied to by loan comapnies, playing with their desire for the American Dream. And before you start berating me, I do not believe I could in good conscience sign a loan, as I am fearful of my ability to pay it off, that's why I currently rent.

Every single clown in the Senate and House that attached their silly little riders onto the final version of the bailout (NOT rescue) plan.
