Rax--Provide a citation for your "quote" from Michelle Obama. She never said I hate America.
The quote was "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am REALLY proud of my country". (AP Feb 20, 2008).
However, one of the candidates DID say "I didn't really love America until I was deprived of her company." Who would that be?--John McCain (Fox News March 13, 2008).

I think at this point a vote for any "third-party" candidate is basically a wasted vote. Unfortunately, the Dems and the GOP have a stranglehold on the electoral process. They seem to have the ability to control the discussion and to shut any "alternative" candidates out of the debate. While I generally don't bash the press, I think that they are part of the problem, because they simply lap up what is fed to them by the two major parties' spokespeople. If they would be willing to put the money/effort into actual newsgathering, they would take the time to look in to the other parties' candidates.
Personally, I would like to see the Libertarian candidates get more coverage, but I would welcome the debate with all comers--Constitution Party, Greens, etc.

Sorry if I misinterpreted your letter. It sounds like we are really closer on this issue than I thought.

The relevance is that you suggest that this country's oil exploration has only recently been hindered, when in fact we have not done anything to enhance our energy independence substantially since the oil crisis of the 70's.
You also initially wrote that China was drilling off the coast of FL (I appreciate your later correction), implying that we could be doing so if not for the environmentalists.
I agree that people tend to look at only one party to blame, but on this issue, there is plenty of blame on both sides of the aisle.
On Your Letters, June 20, 2008
Are the "environmentalists" referred to in this letter President George H.W. Bush, who signed an executive order extending the ban on offshore drilling or Jeb Bush who more recently opposed drilling off the coast when he was governor of Florida? Maybe it was the president who signed the original 1981 law prohibiting offshore drilling, that well-known environmentalist Ronald Reagan? Oh, and even W. signed an executive order extending the ban through 2012.

re: Causing Tornadoes
Alexander Pope said "A little learning is a dangerous thing". This caller proves it!

didder65--I'm very sorry that your grandson was ill, but you've told us nothing that would suggest that he was treated any differently by the hospital because he is on Medicaid. Obviously, the medical staff was correct that there were more serious issues to deal with (especially on a Friday night)--your grandson had a bad case of the flu.
It's hard to have to wait in the ER, especially when a small child is involved. But if you look at the situation objectively he got the treatment he needed in the order the healthcare professionals determined was appropriate and he is doing well.

Delron--have you been to San Francisco, or are you just parroting the stereotypes?
I was born and raised in St. Joe and have lived and worked in the Bay Area for the last 16 years. I'm not sure what "decadence" you're talking about. Yes, there are gay people living here...just like there are in St. Joe (I know it's hard for some folks there to believe).
In my opinion, the "happiness" to which you refer is likely the result of the beautiful surroundings, the wonderful weather, the arts and the diversity one finds in the Bay Area. There are also much greater job opportunities than there are in St. Joe.
With regard to the recruiters, the objection is to schools being forced (by the No Child Left Behind Act) to divulge student contact information to the military. If the military wants to recruit, they should do so just like any other employer. They should not have special access to private information.
I can say from my recent visits to St. Joe, I think the city could use a few more "San Francisco values".
Familyguy: Since you're so concerned about what someone's pastor has to say, what about John McCain's "spiritual guide" Rod Parsley--who believes America was founded to destroy Islam and that Islam is an "anti-Christ religion" brought down from a "demon spirit."
Or, John Hagee who called the Catholic Church the "Great Whore." McCain actively sought his endorsement and still says he's "proud" of it.
At the beginning of his campaign, McCain made a point of seeking the support of Jerry Falwell (America had 9/11 coming because we tolerated gays, feminists and liberals) and even spoke at his university's commencement.
As for me, I couldn't care less what religion a candidate is or even if he/she goes to church. In fact, I think Fred Thompson had it right when he said he had his beliefs and wasn't going to talk about religion. Religion, or lack thereof, should be a non-issue.
