The two hospitals in the state capital are Capital Region Medical Center and St. Mary's Hospital. I understand whichever group owns St. Mary's recently put on hold plans for at least a couple of years to build a brand new hospital, replacing their aging one. (Something about allocating financial resources to other facilities in their group). Nobody is aware of any plans to merge the competitors.

Speaking to several public safety people familiar with the two, niether of the hospitals have a superior reputation. I am not aware of what services are covered by either of them, or if there is overlap. There are those in the area who strongly favor one over the other, be it either CRMC or St. Mary's. Specifics of why? I frankly don't know. I am told that the more challenging patients are usually referred, taken or flown to University of Missouri Columbia, much as Heartland (or Heartless for those that prefer) flies patients to KU or St. Lukes, etc.

Hope this helps a bit, familyguy.

For those despising Heartland, I sympathize with those that have had negative experiences. Adding insult to injury or illness is the worst. On the other hand, having Heartland is better than having nothing at all, even though "better than nothing" is NOT a good marketing position for a medical center.

The last debate on this forum generated close to 100 responses with those strongly hating Heartless and those strongly defending Heartland. So far, the same seems to be holding true this time around. Two stubborn strong-minded sides have been the rule of Missouri dating back to the Civil War area, but I digress.

I have had no truly excellent nor heinous experiences at Heartland. They have ranged for me and my family from really good to so-so to ruh-roh. In ANY profession (or dare I say any workplace?) there will be the great, good, bad and horriffic.

Jefferson City, the home of Dr. Shaff's "other" (or would that be primary?) job is a city of about 40,000, roughly half that of St. Joseph metro. There are two hospitals in that town that fiercely compete for each and every patient they receive. There are numerous other facilities (surgi-centers, etc) affilliated with neither hopital that are well accepted both. Familyguy pointed out in a very logical manner why two hospitals may not work here with the heavy dependence on Medicare and Medicaid. Makes much sense. However, JC is not much different economically, and the two hospitals both do very well.

I submit that if patients were given a choice here, there would be enough patients for both entities to survive. Competition would make Heartland strive to be even better than she already is, or at least improve to a substandard level, depedning upon which "side" you are currently on.

Mr Burnett:

Though I strongly agree that not all Muslims are terrrorists, the fact remains most terrorists are Muslim. It is also difficult (not impossible) to find Muslims that speak out against their Jihadist counterparts.

Though I am willing to give President Elect Obama a fair shake (I believe the President of the USA deserves it), a few things scare the you-know-what out of me.

> Hillary being appointed to the Supreme Court.
> Enough Dems and left-sensitive GOPers in the Senate to move the economy and world security in a dangerous direction.
> A VERY left-leaning Chief of Staff.
> A re-energized Pelosi and Reid.
> The end of the secret ballot in union elections.
>A tax code punishing the wealthy, businesses, entrepreneurs, achievers while rewarding underachievers
>More federal government in government schools
>Universal healthcare
>The security of our national allies (particularly Israel)
>His self-admission that some of his decisions will be unpopular.

Good luck, Mr. President-Elect. You will have many challenges ahead of you.

A couple of years ago Ford made a modification to their Interceptors (law enforcement version of Crown Vics) so the gas tanks wouldn't go BOOM any more. A partial fleet of SUVs is essential for the area (back roads, snow, etc). Crown Vics are proven winners in the field, and somewhat cheaper than an SUV.
