This would be a good time to yank out some stoplights on those streets, as well. Downtown can't get moving if it's always sitting at a red light.

St. Joe also loves us some scrap metal!
The scrap yard is one of downtown's most successful businesses. Why should it move to accommodate an unproven conference center? The comments have done a great job of revealing the real issue - the city does not have one clear vision for either downtown or the east side, let alone both of them together. Can taxpayers be expected to support a conference center until a vision is clearly outlined?

Nope, never had Thai food. I admit to being a wimp when it comes to spicy food. The question is if I think a Thai restaurant would succeed on the South Belt. Or a Whole Foods. My answer is it's highly unlikely. But I'd love to be proven wrong!

I knew there were a lot of great ideas out there. (Although I never saw the wormhole coming!) I agree that the area around Menards seems the most ripe for development with its easy access to the interstate. With gas prices reshaping the way people drive and shop, I think that area has a lot of potential to draw shoppers who would have just zipped on down to Barry Road in the past.
Also a good point about not neglecting the middle Belt. Any hopes for the mall spurring that area?

Jimmy John's is a gourmet sub sandwich shop. Panera is locating at the Pony Express Plaza near Belt and Frederick.

This weekend, I had car trouble, so now that stimulus check has been redirected to the shop. At least I've got it to spend.

On Where, oh, where did that stimulus go?

This column was so over-the-top, I thought it would be obvious it was satire. I was mistaken, I've already heard from two readers who think I'm a horrible person for attacking farmers. I hope they'll get a chance to read the article again and realize just how ridiculous it is to blame farmers for higher prices.

StJoeMo - Good point that a corporation is only the people who make it up. However, the bureaucracy of a large company makes it easy for people to hide. Too often, executives make bad and even unethical decisions and blame it on the corporate way of doing business. It's a lot harder for small business people to get away with that.

One potential restaurant I forgot to include is Jimmy Johns Gourmet Sandwiches. Keep an eye out for them on the South Belt.
